binits\/seg.<\/p><p>Ense\u00f1ar teor\u00eda de la informaci\u00f3n constituye un soporte fundamental para comprender los procesos asociados a las comunicaciones y la forma en que se recupera la se\u00f1al.<\/p><p>Siempre aparece la problem\u00e1tica de la definici\u00f3n de informaci\u00f3n, que se expresa como el logaritmo de la inversa de la probabilidad de un suceso. Seg\u00fan la base del logaritmo utilizada, la unidad cambia: si la base es 2 se obtiene el bit, si la base es 10 se obtiene el Hartley y si la base es e, se obtiene el Nat.<\/p><p>Ahora bien, el gran problema surge cuando hablamos de una se\u00f1al digital y su velocidad en bits por segundo. La confusi\u00f3n es importante porque se mezclan dos conceptos distintos: la informaci\u00f3n y la velocidad de transmisi\u00f3n. Durante un tiempo se intent\u00f3 diferenciar ambos conceptos utilizando el t\u00e9rmino \u201cbinit\u201d para referirse al s\u00edmbolo binario (un uno o un cero), de modo que la velocidad se expresara en binits por segundo.<br \/>Sin embargo, esta soluci\u00f3n resultaba poco pr\u00e1ctica y generaba m\u00e1s complicaciones para los estudiantes (tambi\u00e9n a los docentes). Afortunadamente, esta distinci\u00f3n qued\u00f3 m\u00e1s clara cuando se estableci\u00f3 en la norma IEC 80000-13 (2008), la unidad Shannon (Sh) como unidad expl\u00edcita de informaci\u00f3n.<\/p><p>De esta forma, el bit queda asociado al s\u00edmbolo binario y a la velocidad de transmisi\u00f3n en bits por segundo, mientras que el Shannon representa la cantidad de informaci\u00f3n cuando se utiliza el logaritmo en base dos. Las otras unidades de medida de informaci\u00f3n siguen siendo el Hartley y el Nat.<\/p><p>Distinguir entre s\u00edmbolo transmitido y cantidad de informaci\u00f3n evita confusiones conceptuales: una se\u00f1al digital puede transportar muchos bits por segundo, pero no necesariamente la misma cantidad de informaci\u00f3n en Shannon, ya que esta depende de la probabilidad de los sucesos y no s\u00f3lo del n\u00famero de s\u00edmbolos transmitidos.<\/p><p>En resumen, no todo lo que corre en bits por segundo es informaci\u00f3n: a veces la se\u00f1al habla mucho, pero dice poco. Podr\u00edamos decir que el bit es como alguien que repite \u201cs\u00ed\u201d o \u201cno\u201d a toda velocidad, mientras que el Shannon mide si realmente estaba diciendo algo interesante.
